Hillside Health Care International’s work is based out of Hillside
Clinic, located in Eldridgeville in Belize's Toledo District. Our mission
provides free medical care and other health services at the main outpatient
care clinic and on our mobile clinics to rural villages. We also provide health
education and outreach activities coordinated through our Public Health
program. In addition, Hillside offers educational rotations for students and
residents in medicine, pharmacy, rehabilitation, and public health. The
Hillside team collaborates with the Ministry of Health on services and programs
that we deliver to an impoverished, underserved population. Many of the people
we serve live in isolated villages with no electricity and limited or no access
to a safe water supply. The Toledo District mirrors Belize's cultural diversity
with Mayan, East Indian, Creole, Hispanic and Garifuna cultures.
The licensed clinic is open Monday to Friday and treats 9000
patients a year in its combined programs. The clinic is a modern facility
consisting of a main building with treatment areas, pharmacy, a small lab, the
rehabilitation building, and a dormitory for students. An expansion in early
2017 added a fourth exam room, storeroom, and two wheelchair-accessible
bathrooms.
Primary care services available at the clinic and on mobile clinics
include preventative health care, minor procedures, lab testing and
medications. Our home care program brings nursing, medical care, physical
therapy, and hospice services to homebound patients. The rehabilitation program
provides the only rehabilitation services in southern Belize. Hillside’s public
health program works with the MOH, Ministry of Education, local NGO’s, and
communities to provide outreach and health education to thousands of people
each year.
Since its inception, Hillside has embraced a teaching mission
providing clinical practice opportunities for graduate students. Each month,
13-15 students from the US, UK, Europe, and Australia participate in pharmacy,
medicine, public health, and rehabilitation rotations.
