Located in Karen State, Myanmar, the Jungle School of Medicine - Kawthoolei (JSMK) teaches health care workers how to diagnose and manage the important illnesses in their region. Every morning students see patients in a hospital and clinic on campus, learning how to provide care from staff members and visiting doctors. Afternoons are spent in the classroom. The course lasts 14 months, and graduates take part in relief teams as well as working in regional clinics. 13 villages surrounding JSMK send their sick to the school for health care. In addition efforts to vaccinate children, prevent anemia, and promote hygiene are now underway in some of these villages. JSMK was started in 2011, and has trained more than 80 health care workers.
