CURA Brazil was born out of a dream conceived on a hilltop
in 2007. Standing on that hilltop, representatives put together the initial
dream of being able to help meet the physical and psychological needs of the
people of Itu. From that dream, with a lot of bumps along the way, grew the
inaugural campaign in July, 2009. With the cooperation of the Itu Secretary of
Health, the mayor of Itu, and the collaborative efforts of Brazilian and
American practitioners and students from the medical school in Sao Paulo, 745
patients were seen in the neighborhood of Cidade Nova in the areas of
gynecology, cardiology, dentistry, general medicine and counseling.
From that initial campaign, we continue to grow in the
number of patients seen, the number of practitioners involved, the areas of
service we are able to provide, and in recognition. We have become a recognized
primary care clinic within the Brazilian Health Care System of Itu. This allows
us to access the local pharmacies and secondary referral resources. As our
growth continues we anticipate the addition of more capabilities. Patients
attending the clinic are taught the relationship between hygiene and health, information
is provided to promote dental health, sexual health, mental health and classes
are held in nutrition, healthy habits and physical therapy is provided to help
improve the ability to function in day to day life. We currently are able to
put all of this together once a year in June or July. As we continue to grow
and dream, and seeing the incredible need in eye and dental care, we hope to
begin at least monthly services in these areas by way of mobile trailer clinics
in the next year. We had our first trial our mobile dental trailers in June and
they were a big success!
